Artistic Statement
I believe that good pottery serves to enhance a person's daily experience of eating and drinking. A good pot makes for an interesting visual and tactile experience while fulfilling its primary role as a vessel. Of equal importance is the processing of abstract ideas through the physical act of creation and exploration in clay. I can channel patterns of perfectionism into a medium and then offer up those physical embodiments to the uncertainty of a firing. When I have access, I prefer wood firings above all other types of firing techniques because the fire and ash breathe life into the pot- a particular element that in my limited capacities, I cannot give myself. I want to and need to be constantly reminded that in the uncertainties of life, in the uncontrollable and imperfect, there is a living and breathing beauty that has the power to permeate our inmost souls.
